Online gambling: mafia, addiction and billions of euros

Online gambling represents a multi-billion euro market. The mafia launders millions there, while addicted people gamble their lives away. In 2021, Germany decided to create a gambling control authority. 

The objective: to regulate market abuses while protecting players. Can this work or is the German state simply seeking to rake in big profits?

Every day worldwide, 300 million euros are wagered in online gambling. All it takes is a computer or smartphone to hope to hit the jackpot. While brick-and-mortar casinos are holding their ground, particularly in France, slot machines have migrated to the Internet and social media platforms. On YouTube or Twitch, virtual slot machines are running at full capacity.

Providing their community with recommendations, star streamers receive their percentage on connections, just like credit card issuers, banks or advertisers who collect their share on all transactions.

In Malta, where most of the sites are based, with over 300 registered companies, this new industry now represents 12% of the GDP of the former British colony. It also constitutes a windfall for mafia organizations, particularly Sicilian ones, who find in the structures of these opaque companies an opportunity to generate revenue without paying taxes and to launder the proceeds of their criminal activities.

For investigating her country's political class's involvement in money laundering linked to online gambling, Maltese journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated on October 16, 2017 in a car bomb attack.

Giving voice to numerous participants (Maltese journalist, anti-mafia prosecutor in Italy, former member of the German federal Ministry of Finance, executive of an online casino company, streamer, psychologist, players...), this documentary embraces the subject in all its dimensions: from addiction mechanisms to regulations in force within the European Union, from the circuits used by money flows to the fight against corruption and organized crime.

A worrying overview of a booming sector: its profits in the coming years could exceed those generated today by the gaming industry as a whole, that is more than 265 billion dollars.
